Latest News: Community Hospice & Flagler Hospital Announce Plans for New Inpatient Center for St. Johns County St. Augustine, Florida - Community Hospice of Northeast Florida and Flagler Hospital announced plans today for a new state-of-the-art hospice inpatient care center to be built on the Flagler Hospital campus in St. Augustine. The new 12-bed hospice inpatient unit will serve the short-term, acute end-of-life care needs for residents of St. Augustine and St. Johns County. Community Hospice President and CEO Susan Ponder-Stansel and Flagler Hospital President Joseph Gordy made the joint announcement today, May 20, at a press conference on Flagler Hospital’s campus in St. Augustine. Flagler Hospital will construct an 11,000 square-foot addition to its current facility just west of its main entrance. Community Hospice will have a long-term lease for this space to house its inpatient center. The new center will cost approximately $5 million to construct and will include 12 private patient rooms, as well as family gathering areas, chapel, kitchen and lounge areas for use by employees and family members, and staff offices. Community Hospice medical staff, nurses, certified nursing assistants, psychosocial specialists and spiritual counselors will provide 24-hour care, seven days a week in a unique homelike setting, complete with gardens and walkways. “This inpatient center has been a dream of ours for many years—driven by the desires expressed by community members and a demonstrated need for this unique type of care,” said Susan Ponder-Stansel. “We are thrilled and grateful that Flagler Hospital has given us this opportunity to have such an ideal site for our center.” “Community Hospice and Flagler Hospital have shared a long-standing relationship, with the common goal of providing the best possible care for our patients and their families. This unit is a natural outgrowth of that commitment,” stated Joe Gordy. “We are extremely pleased that our campus is able to accommodate the needs of this new inpatient hospice center.” Flagler Hospital and Community Hospice anticipate construction of the new inpatient center to begin in late 2009 or early 2010.
