Community Hospice of Northeast Florida Names New Inpatient Center for St. Johns County

St. Augustine, Florida - Community Hospice of Northeast Florida's newest inpatient center, to be located on the campus of Flagler Hospital, has been dedicated through a gift from the Mark and Gay Bailey family of St. Augustine.  The center will be known as the Bailey Family Center for Caring.

Community Hospice Foundation Board Chairman Fernando Acosta-Rua made the announcement on Tuesday during a press conference where plans for the new inpatient center were unveiled.

Mark Bailey will serve as campaign committee chair for a $5 million capital campaign planned to support construction of the new inpatient center, which is anticipated to begin in late 2009 or early 2010.  He is providing additional leadership and momentum to the campaign by pledging a seven-figure donation to Community Hospice. Bailey, a graduate of Vanderbilt University, is the president of The Bailey Group, an insurance business focused on health, life, annuities, retirement, benefits and financial products.

“The donation by the Bailey family will allow Community Hospice to provide end-of-life care and an improved quality of life for families in St. Johns County for decades to come,” said Susan Ponder-Stansel, Community Hospice president and CEO. “We are honored to have our newest inpatient unit named after such a dedicated and civic-minded St. Augustine family.”

The 11,000-square-foot Bailey Family Center for Caring will include 12 hospice inpatient beds in private rooms in a unique homelike setting, complete with gardens and walkways.  Visitors will have 24-hour access.  Overnight stays by loved ones will be encouraged.

“Our business shares a common goal with Community Hospice—helping to improve the quality of life of the people we serve. Many of our clients have had their loved ones cared for by Community Hospice and we felt this gift was an extension of our service to them,” stated Bailey. “It also is important for my family to follow the legacy of giving that my father and mother have established in this community.”

The Bailey family has roots going back nearly 50 years in St. Augustine and Mark is a well-known leader in the community serving on the boards of the St. Augustine YMCA, Prosperity Bank, St. Johns County Welfare Federation, the St. Augustine Foundation and the Flagler Health Care Foundation Board.
